DUBAI--MICOM: Sebuah pesawat angkatan udara Uni Emirat Arab (UAE) jatuh di Ras al-Khaimah di wilayah utara negara itu, Senin (22/11), menewaskan pilotnya.

Pilot tersebut sedang dalam misi latihan ketika pesawat Hawk yang dibawanya jatuh, kata militer dalam sebuah pernyataan yang disiarkan kantor berita WAM.

Penyelidikan dilakukan untuk mengetahui penyebab kecelakaan tersebut, tambah pernyataan itu.

Russia, UAE hold talks on modernizing BMP-3 infantry vehicles

Russia and the United Arab Emirates are holding negotiations on modernizing a large number of BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, a defense industry official said on Wednesday.

Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy head of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, is heading the Russian delegation at a meeting of the Russia-UAE intergovernmental committee for military and technical cooperation.

The talks in Abu Dhabi are to focus on the "full modernization of a large number of BMP-3s in an effort to seriously increase their combat capability," the Russian official said.

"We have succeeded in this direction," Dzirkaln said.

The infantry fighting vehicles had been earlier supplied to the UAE by Kurganmashzavod, a Russian machine building company based in Kurgan, western Siberia.

The official said that the military officials in the United Arab Emirates have "a good attitude for cooperating with Russia." "Therefore I make the conclusion that our cooperation has a future."

Dzirkaln also confirmed that Russia will finish delivering Pantsir-S1 short-range air defense systems to the United Arab Emirates by late 2010.

"This year the delivery will be completed. Two more shipments of these vehicles will be delivered and the contract on the delivery will be fulfilled," he said.

Russian media reports said Moscow had signed a $734-million contract with the United Arab Emirates in 2000 on purchasing 50 Pantsir-S1s.

Pantsir-S1 is a short-to-medium range combined surface-to-air missile and antiaircraft artillery system manufactured by the Tula-based Instrument Making Design Bureau (KPB).

It is designed to protect point and area targets and carries up to 12 two-stage solid-fuel surface-to-air missiles in sealed ready-to-launch containers.

The system also has two dual 30 mm automatic cannons that can engage targets at a range of up to 4 km.

The Russian official said it was too early to speak about the prospects of further delivery of Pantsir-S1s to the UAE.

"Further development will consist of providing service maintenance and continuing training UAE specialists in the aspects of operation, repair and service maintenance," he said.

UAE picks rifles from South Korea

The United Arab Emirates has placed an order for K11 airburst rifles, becoming South Korea's first export customer for the weapon, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said.

The emirates placed the order for 40 K11 infantry rifles during the Special Operations Forces Exhibition Conference 2010 earlier this month in Jordan.

"Once a final contract is signed, it will be the first export sale of the K11, possibly making it one of the country's major export items together with the T-50 supersonic trainer jet and K2 Black Panther main battle tank," said a statement from the defense acquisition program.

A final signing of the contract is expected by July and the unit price per rifle is estimated at $14,000.

South Korea unveiled its K11 development two years ago, countering the U.S. Army XM-29, classified as an objective individual combat weapon.

"The South Korean version weighs 13.4 pounds and combines a 5.56mm rifle, with one firing 20mm computer- and laser-controlled shells," the Strategy Page Web site reported.

"The 18-pound XM-29 was developed, in the 1990s, as a replacement for the 40mm grenade launcher. The 40mm rounds weigh 19 ounces each, the 20mm OICW round weighs half that," the report added.

The rifle is developed by the Agency for Defense Development and S&T Daewoo. It has been in operational use by the South Korean army for more than a year.

The weapon consists of a semiautomatic 20mm smart grenade launcher, an underslung assault carbine firing a 5.56mm NATO round, a top-mounted computer-assisted sighting system with integrated laser rangefinder and thermal infrared night vision capabilities, according to the developers.

Operating in the same manner as the XM-29, the South Korean weapon has 20mm and 25mm "smart shells" that use a computer-controlled fuse. Under a self-detonation system, the 20mm round can track its target and explode several feet above it. It is also capable of puncturing concrete walls.

The rifle has an effective range of 500-550 yards.

An earlier U.S.-made model proved to have several flaws, including its weight of about 18 pounds and its inability to put enemy troops out of action. The U.S. rival rifle is also an estimated 25 percent more expensive than the South Korean make.

The United Arab Emirates said the order was intended for trial purposes.

Last year, South Korea's defense exports jumped 13 percent to a record $1.17 billion, a spike aided by government support and a growing trend of more companies breaking into overseas market.

Menhan RI dan Dubes UEA Bicarakan Kerjasama Industri Pertahanan

Jakarta, DMC - Menteri Pertahanan RI Purnomo Yusgiantoro menerima kunjungan kehormatan Duta Besar Uni Emirat Arab (UEA) Yousif Rashid Alsharhan, Selasa (6/4) di kantor Kementerian Pertahanan, Jakarta. Dalam kunjungan ini, kedua pejabat negara tersebut membicarakan tentang peningkatan kerjasama pertahanan antara RI dengan UEA khususnya kerjasama di bidang industri pertahanan.

Kepada Dubes Uni Emirat Arab, Menhan RI menyampaikan ucapan terimakasih karena hubungan kerjasama yang terjalin antara kedua negara selama ini cukup baik, terutama pada masa pemerintahan Presiden B. J. Habibie.

Pada kesempatan yang sama, Menhan juga menyampaikan ucapan terimakasih pemerintah Indonesia kepada pemerintah UEA yang telah memberikan kepercayaan dengan membeli pesawat CN-235 dari PT. Dirgantara Indonesia yang merupakan salah satu industri strategis Indonesia. Pemerintah Indonesia berharap kepada UEA untuk tetap membeli produk industri strategis pertahanan Indonesia yang lainnya.

Menurut Menhan, beberapa waktu yang akan datang direncanakan akan ada rombongan delegasi dari UEA berkunjung ke Indonesia dalam rangka membicarakan berbagai kerjasama di bidang pertahanan antara kedua negara termasuk kerjasama mengembangkan bersama industri pertahanan.

Sementara itu, Dubes UEA mengatakan pemerintah UEA juga menginginkan agar hubungan kerjasama pertahanan kedua negera terus ditingkatkan terutama kerjasama di bidang industri pertahanan. “Sebenarnya ini yang kami inginkan juga agar hubungan ini berlanjut dan insyaAllah UEA akan membeli lebih banyak lagi dari Indonesia”, ungkap Dubes UEA.

Dubes UEA lebih lanjut mengatakan, saat ini UEA juga sedang mengembangkan kapal - kapal kecil untuk keperluan pertahanan. Menurutnya, di sektor ini sangat bagus sekali apabila UEA dapat kerjasama dengan Indonesia.

Selain membicarakan kerjasama di bidang industri pertahanan, dalam kunjungan tersebut, Dubes UEA mengundang Menhan RI untuk dapat hadir dalam pameran persenjataan yang akan diselenggarakan UEA sekitar bulan Juli dan Agustus 2010 di Abudhabi.

Menanggapi undangan tersebut, Menhan mengatakan akan mempertimbangkan untuk hadir dalam pameran tersebut, serta berharap dapat mengikutsertakan produk hasil industri pertahanan Indonesia dalam pameran tersebut.

Namun, lanjut Menhan, pada bulan November 2010 Kementerian Pertahanan RI juga berencana akan menyelenggarakan pameran industri pertahanan atau Indodefence di Jakarta. Dalam pameran ini, juga Kemhan akan mengundang UEA.
